Aquarians are hard to understand on a superficial level. You have to spend time with them and really listen to what they think to understand how they work. Aquarius has a knack for "thinking outside the box." They can seem contrarian or even confrontational when talking to other, stodgier star signs. This is because Aquarius is more interested in solving society's problems than maintaining the status quo.
Are they hippies? Not really. Their message was co-opted by the hippies of the 1960s, but doesn't give you the full picture.
Is Aquarius a water sign? Not really. They are actually an air sign. (We know -- we told you, there is more than meets the eye here!)
Aquarius is actually the Greek character Ganymede, a handsome Trojan prince who became the water bearer to the gods of Olympus. (Fun fact, Ganymede was most likely homosexual and his original name was derived from the Greek wordsganumai "gladdening" andmêdon ormedeôn, "prince" or "genitals." The name may have been formed to contain a deliberate double-meaning!)
Aquarians are known for being compassionate, progressive, anti-prejudice, and non-judgmental of others. Many Aquarians thrive in the post-modern internet age because Aquarians enjoy intellectual abstractions and flourish in the conceptual depths of a world where many explanations of reality may be true at the same time. Aquarians are the intellectual humanitarians of the zodiac. They do not flinch in the face of complex problems because Aquarians love to figure out the solutions.
